UsersWP activation causes error

    I have installed GeoDirectory & Location Manager, using DIVI theme.
    When activating UsersWP plugin, the following error appears:

    Warning: preg_match(): Compilation failed: nothing to repeat at offset 2 in /www/htdocs/xxxxxxxx/wp-includes/class-wp.php on line 222

    Any idea what might cause this issue?

    The UsersWP plugin was active in the beginning. Then I deactivated it since I didn’t use it and I was working on the directory, making changes in the settings, adjusting pages, etc. Now when reactivating UsersWP, this error pops up.

    To get rid of this error, after deactivating UsersWP I have to got to permalink settings an save the settings again (without changes) then everything works well again.

    Hi,

    I activated the plugin without any error. I would suggest you provide the screenshot of the error with steps to regenerate the error so we can do some troubleshooting and fix it for you.

    Hi,

    The errors don’t seem to be due to UsersWP plugin. If you deactivate the plugin and check the errors are still there. Actually, those are not errors but notices due to PHP version compatibility. Either theme or one of the plugins not compatible with your current PHP version. So I would suggest you deactivate all the plugins and activate them one by one to see which plugin causes an issue. You can try this on the staging site as well without affecting your live users.

    Hi Patrik,

    thanks for your feedback. Since the error only appears when activating UsersWP, I assume it must have something to do with the plugin?
    After deactivating the plugin, I have to re-save the permalink settings and the error disappears.

    • I updated PHP version to 7.3.
    • I deactivated all plugins, then only activated UsersWP – the error is back again.
    • I changed the theme to the default Twenty Nineteen – the error is still there.

    So I’m pretty sure that the error is related to the plugin.

    Could you please check again?

    Hey I just wanted to jump in and say that I’m having the same issue. I’m pretty sure it’s a problem with MY permalinks, but activating your plugin seems to cause the PHP error that was posted here.

    As additional info: I disabled Yoast SEO and the problem went away. But today, as soon as I updated GeoDirectory’s permalink structure, it came right back.

    Any ideas why your plugins would cause the problem to become worse? I have installed Permalink Manager Lite and I am rebuilding my permalinks now. I will report back whether or not that is a success.

    So quick update:
    Rebuilding my permalinks did not fix the issue. Neither did disabling the UsersWP plugin. So while activating the plugin may have exacerbated the issue, the issue appears to be with the site or another plugin…

    Searched solutions on Google agree this is a possible solution:
    turn off ALL plugins
    set your permalink structure to default
    save settings
    Go to affected page and make sure it is fixed
    change permalink structure back to custom
    save settings
    check again to make sure fix works
    turn back on plugins
    check again to make sure fix still works

    That is what numerous posts from the past few years indicate is a fix.

    Hi,

    I also found only the above solution for such issues and that is not an issue on all sites having UsersWP plugin but still, I will do some more troubleshooting by creating the same environment on my local server and test it. So, for now, you can follow the above steps to fix this issue and I will update you here as soon as I find anything.

    thanks for your input! I went through the steps as described, but it didn’t help. As soon as I activate UsersWP (no other plugins), the error is back again.

    So, I hope Patrik can find a solution for this issue! So long I won’t be able to use the plugin unfortunately.

    Hi Patrik,
    do you have any news on this issue? We want to launch the website beginning of July and the UsersWP plugin would be super useful!
    Otherwise I would have to look for an alternative solution – if there is any?
