My host did the force redirect to SSL thingy and now it works properly, yay! All fixed.
SSL is fine. But there’s something definitely wonky on that ONE page. And I don’t know what the cause is. The entire site is showing fine for SSL. Just that ONE page: fresnofamily.com/login.
I tested it out on all the browsers I have access to that I know of…
EVERY ONE OF THEM: Chrome, Opera, Edge and Safari (on my ipad) ALL show “not secure” if I type the address without the https…just type it as fresnofamily.com/login it shows “not secure”. Try it!BUT Firefox…can figure it out and shows it secure. The ONLY browser that can figure it out.
But the question is WHAT is it about that one page? The only thing that I can sort out is that it’s this plugin. It doesn’t appear to be hosting…he’s not seeing anything anywhere that’s wrong. (I’m with Spectrum, by the way and he’s been going above and beyond trying to help even though this issue is most likely not on his end.) And indeed any SSL test is coming up fine. In fact going to this site: https://www.whynopadlock.com/ and doing a scan of that specific URL (without the https, of course) shows that it IS secure…so WHY if I type it…as I am keen to do if I don’t have a bookmark…does it turn up not secure on EVERY browser except Firefox??
It is a puzzle.
But once I stopped using a bookmark using that URL…and typed that https in front of it, it ended my problem of not being able to access the admin bar. So I am no longer having the original issue…but this “not secure” issue remains on this one URL.
Ok, so here’s something I figured out this morning…
If I type fresnofamily.com/login in my Chrome browser, it brings up this:
(see attached image)Notice that it says “not secure”?? And therein may possibly lie my whole problem… I THINK…
Because when I actually type https://fresnofamily.com/login, or just the secure homepage and click the login link from there…it brings me to a secure connection. And SO FAR this morning…logging in via that secure connection gets me into my site, access to my admin bar, no problem. SO FAR.
Things have looked hunky-dory before and then later on in the day gone wonky again…so I will continue to test this throughout the day. But I redid my bookmark for this site, which did indeed leave off the http part and just had fresnofamily.com/login …leaving my browser to figure out the rest, I guess…and so for some unknown reason, it’s not forwarding?
It’s strange to me that it’s Google Chrome browser that is causing this problem and their the ones that put that SSL requirement in place…yet no problem on Firefox…so clearly, Firefox is able to figure out that I DO have SSL and sort it out properly and log me in properly, but Chrome cannot seem to? (Assuming that is indeed the issue…)
All I can figure is that there’s something in either my site or maybe that Recaptcha plugin that is messing with the SSL when I don’t type out the http part…but I really shouldn’t have to type that all out! I don’t have to on any of my other sites and never have a problem. They all show as secure, so clearly Chrome is able to figure it out on them!
Well, here’s hoping that this is a simple solution to a huge month-long headache! We shall see how the day goes.
I just spent far too much time trying all the different google captchas, and now NONE of them will work. Even the one that worked before. I get this (see image) for everything. EVEN if I deactivate the recaptcha plugin! Why would I still have a recaptcha error if the plugin isn’t even activated? I’m so confused. And tired of beating my head against a wall over all this and getting absolutely nowhere. And the perplexing problems just keep piling up.
I’m going to bed. Maybe in the morning someone will have miraculously figured this all out. At the very least I will have a clear head again, hopefully.
Well, I’m striking out with the other captcha. Error messages all around. I’m going to go to my host and see about fixing the SSL on this page first. Maybe that will fix that part at least.
Ok I changed to V3, but now I am getting this message on the login page:
reCAPTCHA ERROR: The secret parameter is missing or invalid. Please try again. If it’s not one thing, it’s another!
Ok here’s something else…that recaptcha plugin is showing wonky to me. It’s in my plugin list, but if I click on “view details”, I get a button that says “install now”.
When I go to UsersWP extensions area, the recaptcha extension shows greyed out as active…but if I click on the “more info” link…I get a “plugin not found” message popup.
See attached images.
I have no idea what those Google warnings mean. 🙁
Strange…it’s showing secure on Firefox. Just not on Chrome. The same place all these problems are happening. I’m guessing this is a clue?
Also…I cannot for the life of me figure out how to change the version? I am not seeing anywhere to edit settings for UsersWP recaptcha??
Is this relevant? I noticed that the SSL is missing on the login page ONLY. Why would that be? I thought it should be applied across the entire domain?
October 12, 2019 at 10:47 pm in reply to: UsersWP recaptcha makes me unable to access my admin #5464I can tell you right now that it WILL work once I dump cookies, since that’s one of 2 things that works to get me in temporarily. And then next time I go back, I have the same problem again.
I just went to my mom’s house, miles away, totally different WiFi. Same problem. 🙁
It does this on every computer and device in the house, and apparently even outside my house.
Ok, I’ll look into that, but I thought I should let you know that the problem is back. Apparently it had NOT actually gone away with the deletion of recaptcha. SIGH. I swear this is going to drive me to an early grave. This has been vexing me for WEEKS now, and nothing has worked!
October 12, 2019 at 12:03 am in reply to: UsersWP recaptcha makes me unable to access my admin #5459Ok I went in to try to do that and discovered that I am getting an error message on the UsersWP recaptcha extension:
“Something went wrong! : Download failed. Not Found”
I uninstalled and tried to reinstall and it’s not there. I am trying through the UsersWP/Extensions menu.
It’s gone? The problem is gone too. But I no longer have a working recaptcha.
The problem is actually back. Did you log in via site admin? I see you registered as a subscriber but that wouldn’t give you admin access…but I know I’ve posted (privately) my admin login before… I’m guessing you were the one that reactivated the recaptcha and that is why the problem is back? Trying to figure out how the recaptcha was reactivated because I’m pretty sure I didn’t reactivate it.
